Understanding Candle Wax

Within the world of candles, there are countless of scents to choose from. Peony, sandalwood, pumpkin, amber: there are so many amazing scents to choose from. However, not all candles are the same. The ingredients used in each candle can affect the burn time, the scent, and it can even affect your health. For the best experience, it is best to buy high quality candles. Here is a rundown of the different types of candle wax, as well as the pros and cons of each.

Paraffin Wax

The most commonly used type of candles wax is paraffin. It is used to make many different types of candles because it can contain high amounts of fragrance and color. Though it is considered the most versatile wax for candles, paraffin is a by-product of petroleum and is not sustainable. Paraffin wax also burns very quickly, meaning you won’t get a large amount of burn time. Another downside to paraffin wax is its ability to create soot, which can lead to respiratory health problems, and it will begin to soil the walls, appliances and furniture.

Soy Wax

A much more sustainable and eco-friendly wax option is soy wax. It is 100% all natural and vegan since it is made of soybeans. Though it can hold fragrance fairly well, it is hard to add color to soy wax. The downside to soy wax is, on its own, it burns too quickly and won’t give as many hours of burn time as other wax options.

Coconut Wax

Coconut wax is fairly new to the candle-making world. Coconut wax candles tend to be more expensive that most, but they are able to carry fragrance and color very well. It is an eco-friendly option and doesn’t produce as much soot as paraffin wax.

Beeswax

The oldest form of candle wax is beeswax. It has been used for candles since the Egyptian era! It is a great wax because it is 100% all-natural, smokeless, they don’t create soot and they even help purify the air. Beeswax has a slight scent of sweet honey, which compliments some fragrances very well.

Our Favourite Blend

At New Flame, we have found the best wax to use for our candles. It is actually a combo of soy, coconut and beeswax in one. Our wax blend is 100% natural, and the addition of beeswax allows the candles to last longer than others. We’ve tried and tested all different types of waxes and have found that this combo results in a clean, even burn. It has the best burn time, is less likely to tunnel, and it preserves the scent the best. Additionally, coconut and soy wax release the fragrance better when burned.
